The democratisation of the internet is coming. Of course, it could be said that the internet is a democracy in its current state, but with big businesses controlling the way we connect and thus dictating who has access, the actual technology behind it is far from equal in its distribution. However, open-source telecommunications delivered by a unified, meshed technology stack is being made possible thanks to an investment fund set up in the US by Hillary Clinton. It could revolutionise the way connectivity is distributed and the New America Foundation is at the heart of pushing through these proposals.

As an open-source project, it involves the participation of a large group of people and cooperation on a grand scale to get off the ground. In the end, everyone will be able to become a node on this open-source network through which people can communicate outside of traditional telecoms structures. Today you might use Comcast internet to get online or rely on AT&T for your service. In the future you might rely on the various elements which will go towards creating this collaborative internet stack, all with government funding.

The first tool in the arsenal of this initiative is a software application called The Several Project. It essentially allows two or more mobile phones to communicate with one another even when they are not linked via direct internet access. Instead, the connection is provided by any form of wireless network, either traditional GSM cellular signals or a local Wi-Fi hotspot. It is important to note that the internet does not have to be involved at any point, as long as the same network is linking the devices.

The Several Project is supported by the second facet of this movement, known as Commotion. This is basically a project which allows people to set up networks that do not have central hubs through which all communication is routed. So far, Commotion has been implemented by technologies as diverse as satellite and dial-up, bringing internet access to those who might otherwise be without it.

As you might expect, this kind of grass-roots approach to the internet is something which is appealing to people who might be excluded from using the web by standard methods. The revolutions which swept the Arab world in 2011 saw various governments cutting off web access in order to stifle the activities of organisers. However, the third part of the technology stack, a piece of software known as Tor, has helped people using these open-source means of communication to hide their identities and locations. While bloggers and journalists have harnessed Tor for secrecy purposes, it has also been used by military organisations, which shows that it could also have commercial uses.

While web access is important, sometimes voice communications need to be made outside of centralised networks. This is where OpenBTS and Asterisk step in, combining the hardware and software necessary to call from device to device without travelling through the main landline or wireless connections. While VoIP is used by millions of Comcast internet subscribers on fixed-line or 3G connections, OpenBTS and Asterisk allow users to harness GSM networks for the same purposes.

The least legally viable of these proposed technologies is Open GSM. This is the mobile equivalent of pirate radio and essentially involves individuals building their own base stations and broadcasting signals to mobile phones over parts of the spectrum that are technically the property of major providers. While this may not be particularly sensible to use in the US, it could be useful for people trying to communicate in countries where the government has shut down the telecoms infrastructure.

There is no doubt that an open-source technology stack that lets people communicate without having to go through mainstream services is certainly valuable. While in the West it may bring internet connections to those who have been ignored by telecoms firms, it also has the potential to bypass government interference in less stable areas of the globe.

Remember having to stay seated at your desk to get any work done? Remember needing to be directly plugged into the printer in order to get it to work? Remember when a cell phone only made phone calls? Wireless networks have become not only a trend. For some businesses and families, they have become a necessity.

A World of Possibilities

A wireless network opens up everything to a person with just a touch of their hand. Just look at any of the current cell phone reviews. You can’t help but notice that phones and the wireless networks they use offer customers the ability to be just about anywhere, without losing access to their information. Coverage is steady expanding.

Almost wherever you go, you still have the opportunity to access files from work, participate in a corporate meeting and even make a purchase from an online auction site. A wireless network means that the same work you do at the office each and every day can be managed from a hotel room across the country while enjoying a vacation.

Companies can keep everyone working no matter where they are. Documents can be completed and meetings can still proceed. Even from home or vacation, emails can be answered and taken care of right away. Families can keep tabs on everyone no matter where they are. With GPS capabilities, parents know just where their kids are. And both parties have to appreciate the fact that even when a cell phone is turned off or the volume is turned down, they can use the wireless network to locate it.

Convenience

Many cell phone reviews mention the different wireless networks that offer a certain brand, model or style of cell phone. No matter which you choose, convenience is one of the most appealing aspects of a wireless network. You can still make phone calls. You can still send a text. But with a wireless network you don’t have to carry around a laptop to check on the latest news. You don’t even need a computer to look over a document and sign. Cell phones are small and incredibly portable compared to the alternatives.

Other Technology Applications

A wireless network is not just beneficial for use with your phone. According to several cell phone reviews it is possible to use the wireless network of a phone to provide an internet link for anything from a computer to a gaming system. It can connect an entire family to an online movie on the big screen.

For families that want to, it is possible to look to this wireless network to handle all of their internet needs. Aside from a cell phone, certain equipment makes it possible to create a link to the wireless network throughout the home. This means getting work done in the living room and printing without ever getting up to connect to the printer in the office. It means that the gamers can link up to their favorite games and take on the competition with ease.

Wireless network usage is steadily increasing. As more opportunities become available through apps and other forms of cell phone development, a wireless network will become even more important. There is no cord tying someone down to just one location. There are infinite possibilities for what can be done and where.

It seems that the authorities at AIEEE has lost interest on it’s ‘APPLICATION STATUS PAGE’.

Even I applied for AIEEE and was about to check if my application had been received there or not.

I very well understand that the Indian government procedures are long and perhaps not paid sufficient attention (even if it is national or international concern).

So, here is the screenshot.

So may be the authorities at AIEEE ARE NOT concerned with the spelling mistakes on their official website.

See this link

I wholeheartedly request them to make this correction, so that, it doesn’t show the world that AIEEE unit is really careless. Sad! This can happen ONLY and ONLY in India.

Computers were always meant to make our living comfortable, in other words lazy. And with newer gadgets coming, It gives us no reason to get up.

First on the list is the Android Army marching into the living room. Android@Home is a new system allowing access to the controls of any device running Google Android. From switching the lights on and controlling the wireless speaker systems to your exercise bike and working out your daily progress of burnt calories. The Cloud will store your music archive and you will be able to play it from any other device. You can even control your room temperature. With those ambitious types at Google, you’ll soon be dispatching a small army of robot vaccum cleaners, lawnmowers and baby-walkers.

Apple too has its rumours of entering into the TV business. Now, if it’s true…. imagine yourself entering into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV. The idea is to bundle Apple TV and iTunes together. And if it could stream music through your iPad and be controlled by it… Mesmerizing.

E-books are now coming into the trend, hence cleaning out the closets for you. Newer and more efficient Home Security systems are now into the market which takes care of your humble abode while you’ll be enjoying your vacation.

Siri can actually be called a voice activated personal assistant that allows a conversational experience with the iPhone rather than the usual screen tapping. Siri can be used to send messages, read e-mails, fix appointments, play music- all voice controlled. Apple has also given Siri some IQ powering it with Wolfram Alpha- geek version of the Google search engine.

It may fail to recognize some accents given it is a software after-all, but it will surely work quite well compared to others. Using Siri would be like to have your own personal butler ( digital though ). Don’t expect it to run on iPhone 4 as it is an iPhone 4S exclusive, for now at least.

So finally friends, we are seeing a small glimpse of the future in our hands. The future would be much like what we see in the Iron Man movies…

Introduction to Wire Transfer

Wire transfer is a method of electronic fund transfer from one person to another person or institution. A wire transfer can be made from one bank account to another bank account through a transfer of cash at cash counter of the bank. They are meant for transferring individualized payments but can also be used for transfering payments in bulk, you should speak to your bank about it. Wire transfer is the safest method to accept payment to your account and should be initiated with people whom you know well enough.Just wonder, what will happen to you, if your client was found to be a criminal or a politician involved in huge scams? You will be traced if you transact wire transfer with people of such sort.

Searching for Alternative to Paypal

This post is exclusively for people who have recently got clients abroad and wish to accept payment from them with considerably good conversion rates (better than that of Paypal).

Most of you who are Indian users of Paypal, must have encountered the poor conversion rate provided by Paypal, which is about 3 to 5 % lower than the market value, and hence makes no sense to transfer money through it. Furthermore, their service has degraded and they have heavy charges for everything and it can charge upto 5 to 10% of your amount, which is definitely a very considerable sum of money.

Reserve Bank Of India implemented various complications under Paypal, after which, it’s a bit difficult to transfer money via Paypal and furthermore, you have to quote your ‘PAN Details’.

RBI’s guidelines are correct but Paypal does not wish to report it’s transactions above 500$ to the RBI, which made it compulsory for them to put the PAN restriction.

Refund Issues with Paypal

If by any way, your bank transfer gets cancelled mid way, you will loose a lot of money (about 10%).

This way, Paypal has become a way to decrease your money by a great fraction. It’s good that, you have refund facility, so that you can refund all of your clients with the money you charged. And when you pay them bank, Paypal will refund it’s charge one by one. You will have to use the partial refund option many times so that you don’t owe much to the client.

And they’ll get about 93% of their payment.

There are various instances where Paypal seems to be charging high and providing very low conversion rates, which makes it NOT A PROFITABLE deal out.

And this is the reason, why I am writing on International Bank Transfer.

Why International Bank Transfer?

International bank transfer is the process under which, you pay the equivalent amount in local currency to your bank adding up the transaction charge and providing your bank with the details of the final beneficiary.

Remittance of foreign currency through bank transfer provides your beneficiary with good and justifiable conversion rates that creates a difference while using any another payment mode.

You must understand that, people using Bank Transfer are TAXABLE and have clear tax records as the banks have initiated tight regulations on Bank account holders.

The process of international bank transfer takes place as follows:-

Visit your Bank

Ask them for the ‘INTERNATIONAL MONETARY TRANSFER / INTERNATIONAL BANK TRANSFER’ form or procedure papers.

Fill in the details of your beneficiary (details are given below).

Deposit equivalent money into your bank account.

Submit it to the designated counter.

Debit money from your bank account in honor of submitted request for international transfer.

Wait for 2-3 days and your transfer is done safely.

New users of International Bank Transfer are bit confused about it’s duration and various other aspects, which is definitely a concern in case the amount you wish to remit is a huge one.

So, before initiating a bank transfer, make sure that you have all of the correct details of the final beneficiary so that the bank transfer does not get reversed or else you’ll be charged a bit of money.

The details you need are :-

Beneficiary’s Name, Bank A/C No.

Beneficiary’s Bank Details such as address, branch, SWIFT Code, Business Name

You may also need correspondent banks ( in case your currency is variable)

Letter of Credit / Debit from your ‘Client’

Letter on Your Letter Head to the Branch Manager (explaining the purpose of transaction)

It’s the best way to get paid by bank transfer, as it is SAFER and CHEAPER method to get the money into your account. Banking officials are very co-operative in this regards and very helpful. And banks provide competitive conversion rates which is nearly equivalent to the currently traded value in FOREX.

Also be alert that transactions higher than 10,000$ are reported to the taxation authorities, and hence you should not forget to quote the income from this into your taxation bills.

You will need to explain your bank about the fact that why you want this transaction to take place i.e. the PURPOSE of transaction. Contact your bank before hand to get everything explained.

This is called Purpose Code, as you may have observed while bank transfers through Paypal.

SWIFT Code is assigned to every organized bank and makes international transaction easy to take place. You can visit your bank’s web site or premises to know about it or also search your bank’s SWIFT code on the SWIFT website.

You must ask your bank for the list of correspondent banks if you have to accept payment in various currencies (such as USD, JPY, EURO, POUND, etc) and vice versa. If you are transferring the payment to someone, ask them the details of correspondent banks.

Kindly, go through the RBI guidelines as follows, before initiating any “INTERNATIONAL BANK TRANSFER”.

Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme of RBI, all resident individuals, including minors, are allowed to freely remit up to USD 200,000 per financial year (April – March) for any permissible current or capital account transaction or a combination of both.

Under the Scheme, resident individuals can acquire and hold immovable property or shares or debt instruments or any other assets outside India, without prior approval of the Reserve Bank. Individuals can also open, maintain and hold foreign currency accounts with banks outside India for carrying out transactions permitted under the Scheme.

The remittance facility under the Scheme is not available for the following:

i) Remittance for any purpose specifically prohibited under Schedule-I (like purchase of lottery tickets/sweep stakes, proscribed magazines, etc.) or any item restricted under Schedule II of Foreign Exchange Management (Current Account Transactions) Rules, 2000;

ii) Remittance from India for margins or margin calls to overseas exchanges / overseas counterparty;

iii) Remittances for purchase of FCCBs issued by Indian companies in the overseas secondary market;

iv) Remittance for trading in foreign exchange abroad;

v) Remittance by a resident individual for setting up a company abroad;

vi) Remittances directly or indirectly to Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius and Pakistan;

vii) Remittances directly or indirectly to countries identified by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) as “non co-operative countries and territories”, from time to time; and

viii) Remittances directly or indirectly to those individuals and entities identified as posing significant risk of committing acts of terrorism as advised separately by the Reserve Bank to the banks.

Source: RBI Guidelines

So, in short, Intl. Bank transfer is the most legal and least complex way to pay and get paid keeping the above points into consideration.

You should follow the taxation rules as well as bank transfer regulations as laid out by the Reserve Bank of India.

Possible Alternative(s)

International Wire Transfer being a very safe method, there are several alternatives to Bank Transfer.

Some of them are as follows:-

Western Union Money Transfer- Western Union is a financial service and communications company based in the United States. It has several divisions, with products such as person to person money transfer, money orders, business payments and commercial services.

I know I am late but it’s never too late to explain things as vital as facts about registration in competitive exams such as IIT – JEE (Joint Entrance Exam).

As mentioned in various posts on this web site, that JEE is the grandest examination conducted in India with millions of students’ enrollment. And only a few thousand of “brainy chaps” get into what is called the IIT {Indian Institute of Technology, the Harvard cum Pennsylvania University equivalent in India}, which is known to produce really great technocrats who have changed the way we live.

You name the field and the topper is definitely an IITian. IIT may not be the best university in the world, but the sort of zeal seen in youngsters of India towards this examination makes it to be the toughest and widely acknowledged examination on the globe.

Let me not waste much time boasting of the IITs, but help you getting through the registration process, which is really easy.

I suggest you to go for ONLINE REGISTRATION instead of OFFLINE REGISTRATION as it saves money and is easier to do. In case of offline registration, there are several chances to commit errors which can lead your application to be rejected.

On the other hand, you must be really really very careful with ONLINE REGISTRATION as the process is simple but it takes a bit of time and dedication.

The first thing that you must do is, register on http://jeeonline.iitd.ac.in/ and fill the huge form that you see on screen.

You will have to include various details such as Name, Parent’s Name, their occupation and educational attainment, details of address, Age, Birth Date, Choice of Center.

You have to choose two centers for the JEE. Don’t ever choose both of them as same, this will increase the chances of rejection.

The form is easy to understand and will also ask for details such as category (if applicable).

You must give the most appropriate answer in this form and at the end you will be prompted with a PDF Document that must be saved and printed on A4 Size paper.

There will be two pages, the first one will contain your details along with two Payment Voucher for challan (to be filled by BANK ONLY). One of the vouchers will be cut and taken by the bank for it’s reference.

The second page contains details of where you have to post the printed content. It also contains list of additional documents that you have to post along with the JEE registration form.

For online registration, you need the following :-

Laser Printer

2x A4 Size Paper to Print

A5 Size Envelope

Recent Color Photograph covering about 75% of face, in WHITE background (Dimensions: 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm)

Attested copy of mark-sheet (Get your xerox of mark sheet 10th class attested by a Gazetted Officer)

Registration on JEE’s website

Pay the Challan to Selected Bank (After printing the form)

Complete the procedure given on IIT JEE Registration web portal, which has been made really easy for use. Be really attentive when you give the entries as you can’t change them in future. Be sure to select categories, DA or visual impairment if applicable to you. Also supplement sufficient documents to factually prove everything written in your form.

Do not commit any sort of error. Check at least ten times before putting up any entry, as this is a major concern for every one.

When you have completed registration, the screen will prompt you to download your JEE application form which is filled with the entries provided during online registration. It will also bear a BAR CODE below which the application number is mentioned.

There will be two pages in this form.

On the first page, you have to stick your recent color photograph (covering about 75% face) in white background and preferably wearing dark clothes to make your picture clear enough. Also, you have to mention your application number at the back of photograph along with your name. And stick it with glue.

Also this page, contains the bank challan form (two copies), one copy has to be retained by bank and another copy will be posted in the envelope to the Charmain, IIT DELHI.

You have to manually enter your guardian’s name and also sign in the given boxes and assigned spaces.

Also get it countersigned by your parent in the given section of form. {It is already mentioned}.

From the second page, cut the upper part and paste it on the front of the A5 Size Envelope.

This will make your To & From details clear on the front of the envelope making it easy for Post Office to speed post.

Do not bend the section containing the BAR CODE any way while inserting the main application form in the envelope.

Also attach the attested copy of mark-sheet.

And you are done, filling up the entire form for JEE. Now, you have to visit your nearest pots office and ask them to send it to the address mentioned in the address slip via ‘SPEED POST’ only. It should charge you about 30 Rs.

In short, the entire cost is as follows:-

1610 INR- JEE REGISTRATION FEE {As in AXIS BANK}

60 INR – 8 Color pass port size photograph {As in leading photo studios of Indore}

30 INR – Speed Post Charge

This sums up-to 1700 INR in all.

You should also get two xerox of the completed form along with the bank’s stamps, for future use (if necessary). This can help in various instances where you have committed mistake in the form or had forgot to post something or the other in the envelope.

If you shall have any query, read this PDF Document and if you ever get caught into some mistake or find yourself puzzled, ring the phones at IITs.

Vocre, a new iPhone app released by translation company myLanguage, aims to ease those problems by enabling users to translate their spoken voice into foreign languages. The app uses the iPhones accelerometer as a source of input so that users dont need to tap the screen. They simply hold the phone in one direction to record their voice, and then flip it in the other direction to make it talk in the translated language.

The translation engine trains itself based on user contributed corrections, queries made by other users in their native languages, as well as their own linguists, to determine the most common way a native speaker would say a particular phrase.

RIM has not stopped bringing out new and improved versions of their already dominating BB smartphones. The latest being the Torch 9860 and Curve 9360. I’ll first talk about the former.

The Torch 9860 targets those who are caught up by the touch-screen revolution brought about by the iPhones and Androids. Although it doesn’t possess the typical BlackBerry looks with the absence of the trademark QWERTY, it is still good looking. The styling is very good, with a classy black and grey design, slim form factor, great build and the premium feel of a high-end smartphone. It has the usual 4 hardware keys and the optical trackpad. However, the touch-screen dominates the navigation. It has great graphics with the large 3.7-inch, 250 ppi display. It runs the new OS 7.0 with all PIM capabilities, document editor, the amazing e-mail support and the famous BBM. The battery should last you a full day. Lack of a hardware keypad makes the phone seem suitable for ones who are not into heavy texting, sending long e-mails and long timers on BBM.

Now lets move on to sexy curves. At first when the Curve 8520 came out, it made BB popular amongst the younger lot, getting them hooked on BBM. RIM hopes to find similar success with the new Curve 9360. The new Curve is light enough for you to hardly notice it in your pocket. It also runs the BB OS 7.0. It sports a 2.44 inch display, the usual set of 4 keys and optical trackpad, RIM’s unmatched e-mailing, document editing, PIM etc. etc. Its free apps for Facebook, Twitter, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger help you to become a social animal. The keyboard is pretty decent. The music player is very good, while the multi-format video player and camera perform their duties quite up-to the mark. It is quite a good choice if you are willing to join the BB group. Also its a good upgrade for older BBs as well.

Well, There really is a BlackBerry for everyone…
